10 Tips to Extend the Life of Your Memory Card

Generally, the average life span of the commonly used memory card, including CF cards, SD cards, Micro SD cards, memory sticks and the likes, is often 5 years. However, that doesn’t mean your owned memory card will surely last up to 5 years. Without rightly using your memory card, it can be damaged or failed within months or even days. However, it is also not impossible to use for 5 years or even longer easily, as long as you act carefully and rightly. Really want to prolong the life of your memory card as possible as you can? OK! The following ten tips are absolutely what you are looking for.

Tip1: Shut down electronic device before removing or inserting memory card

No matter what type of electronic devices you are using, including photo cameras, video camcorders, MP3 players, mobile phones or the likes, the sudden or rude extracting or inserting often is able to damage device memory card and cause some write/read errors, especially when it is still working. Hence, no matter what your purpose is, always remember to turn off the electronic device before you begin to remove or plunge in your memory card.

Tip2: Keep memory card away from hot, wet, cold, dusty or magnetic places or fields.

Unlike living human beings or animals, memory card cannot protect itself away from any dangerous element, like water, snow, rain, fire or the likes. It is often your job to keep it away from hot, wet, cold, dusty or magnetic places or fields, if you do want to use it for a really long, long time. If possible, you also can prepare a specific plastic or wooden box/cover to keep it in a safe place when it is not in use.

Tip3: Do not share a single memory card with other electronic devices.

Not all memory cards can be used on all types of electronic devices. Hence, to avoid some incompatible issues, like not formatted errors, RAW file system errors and other memory card errors, you’d better especially use the same storage card on a single electronic device only. Do not attempt to share it with other devices.

Tip4: Do not directly download data to memory card over the internet.

In case of some unexpected virus-infected memory card issues, you’d better always download data from the safe places and also do not directly set the memory card as the destination device. Simply download it all to your computer partitions at first to see whether it is virus-infected and copy it to your memory card.

Tip5. Keep memory card device fully charged all the time.

Like the sudden memory card extraction or inserting, the sudden power loss also can corrupt the used memory card and cause data loss troubles for users, especially when you do perform a formatting, deleting or data transformation process there. So, always remember to timely fully charge your electronic device all the time.

Tip6. Do not bent, burn or damage memory card.

Generally, when the memory card is merely logically damaged, like getting an unformatted error problem, RAW file system problem and more, people do have chances to rescue both of the memory card and inner reserved data. However, if your memory card is physically corrupted, there is often no promising solution to get everything back. Hence, do not bent, burn or damage your memory card in common use.

Tip7. Do not edit or do some changes to memory card data on your computer directly.

In case that some unexpected accidents happen and damage or corrupt your cherished memory card data, like sudden shock, instant power loss or dropping, virus attacking and others, you’d better firstly copy it all to your computer and edit or do some changes to the duplicate data straightly.

Tip8. Format or scan memory card rightly.

The formatting process can help resolve many memory card issues, like virus-infection problems, not formatted memory card errors, memory card RAW format error, memory card error, etc. So, when you do have to format your memory card for fixing some card problems, always back up your important data well before any format. Moreover, also regularly scan memory card with antivirus software to avoid, detect and remove dangerous verses timely.

Tip9. Extract memory card out from computer timely.

Always remove your memory card out from computer, once you do finish the data transformation process. Never leave it on your computer longer than necessary.

Tip10. Keep memory card with enough free space.

In daily use, always remember to regularly delete or remove some useless or unnecessary files, folders and programs to keep your memory card clean. With enough free space, you often can freely copy or cut data to this memory card at anywhere and anytime.

Extra Notes:

1). Memory card data recovery software is really useful.
If you do delete, remove or lose something useful off from memory card for your mistaken format, deletion, virus-infection, rude extraction or inserting and the likes, the memory card data recovery software is what you need to recover the original information back. Moreover, the satisfying data recovery results often happen when the memory card with data loss troubles has not been rewritten or reformatted since then. Hence, no matter what type of data loss troubles you are unluckily meet, remember to stop using that memory card before you start to do any data recovery process there.

2). Use memory card Readers or Adapter to help you.
If your computer cannot recognize or read your inserted electronic device memory card as usual, you definitely can easily change another card Reader or Adaptor to have a try. If it is the problem of your electronic device, after changing a different Reader or Adaptor, you often will also use that memory card as before. So, prepare one or two such devices for the future use.
